The Danish sculptor Robert Jacobson was born in Copenhagen on June 4, 1912. He attended primary school from 1920 to 1926, and then made a living working in numerous jobs. In 1930 he produced his first wooden sculptures, which he developed completely auto-didactically. In 1933 Jacobsen began an apprenticeship as a stonemason and woodcarver, though as a sculptor he remained self-taught. After his first exhibition in Copenhagen in 1940, Jacobsen joined the resistance during the occupation of Denmark by the German Wehrmacht. In 1947 Jacobsen received an art scholarship to Paris. In 1947 he left Denmark and lived in France from 1947 to 1969. From 1962 to 1981 Jacobsen was a professor at the 'Kunstakademie der Bildenden Künste' in Munich. In 1969 Robert Jacobsen returned to Denmark, where he lived in Tĺgelund, west of Egtved. In 1976 Jacobsen was appointed professor at the Royal Dutch Art Academy. He held this position until 1985. From 1986 Robert Jacobsen worked with the French sculptor Jean Clareboudt on the construction of the sculpture park at the Třrskind Gravel Pit near Egtved and Vejle, here the two artists produced several monumental sculptures from steel, granite and wood. In 1991 Jacobsen and Clareboudt finished their project. Robert Jacobsen died at home in Tĺgelund on January 26, 1993.
